Adding 3D flowers to your parchment projects can add a whole new dimension to the finished piece. These 3D roses make a beautiful embellishment to cards and gift boxes. The tutorial gives instructions for white roses but you could use coloured parchment to make them if you wish. Whatever you choose these pretty little flowers are sure to add something special to your next card.

Step One

Step Two

Step Three

Cut 13 heart shapes and one round disc from plain parchment. Craft punches are best for this as they are quick and accurate but if you do not have these you can use the templates below and trace them in white pencil before cutting them out with parchment scissors.

Using the large ball tool emboss all 13 heart shapes on both sides so they are a smooth bright white colour. The heart shapes will curl when you emboss them. This is fine and the desired effect. Roll one of the heart shapes up tightly to form a small cylinder. This will form the very centre of your rose.
Take the parchment disc you cut earlier and using Pergamano Perga Kit, a silicon based glue, put a large "blob" in the centre of the disc. This glue is slow drying and very thick. Allowing you to position the petals without them moving.

Step Four

Step Five

Practice Image

Position each embossed heart shape into the wet silicon glue starting from the outside and working towards the centre as shown above. Try to keep an even shape when doing this. Finally, take the heart shape you rolled earlier and push it gently into the centre of the glue to finish the rose.
Set the rose aside and let it dry for several hours.

Once you are sure the glue is dry and the petals are fixed firmly you need to cut the excess parchment away from the base using parchment craft scissors.
You can save and print this image to practice the technique. To save, right click (click and hold for Mac users) and choose save image as from the menu that appears and save it to your hard drive.

These tutorial are by no means the definitive guide to parchment craft, rather they are a step by step explanation of how I achieve certain effects when parching.
Some parchment techniques can look quite complicated when you are viewing the finished result but when broken down into simple steps are not as difficult as they first appear.
The key to parchment in my experience is patience - never rush a pattern or try to look for short cuts to finish a design quickly, you will only be disappointed with the results.
Most of all, practice. You will be amazed at what you can achieve with a few simple tools and a little time and patience.
